Earlier this year, Suzuki had unveiled the Gixxer 150cc motorcycle along with the Let’s scooter. While the latter has been on sale in the Indian market for some time now, Suzuki has been tight-lipped about the Gixxer. Now though, it has been revealed that Suzuki dealers have started accepting bookings of the Gixxer for a token of Rs 5,000 with deliveries expected to commence in July.
The Gixxer is powered by a four-stroke single-cylinder engine which unlike the GSR150, will be mated to a five-speed gearbox. Though Suzuki hasn’t revealed the performance figures of the engine, it has been speculated that the engine will churn out 13.7bhp and 13.4Nm of torque. Though the power is very similar to the GSR150, the Gixxer will come equipped with Suzuki Eco Performance (SEP) which is expected to improve the bike’s efficiency.
Suzuki claims that the new stiff and light frame will aid the bike’s riding characteristics as well as performance. The Gixxer gets a monoshock and drum brake at the rear while the front wheel gets a telescopic shocks and a disc brake. The short and trendy exhaust has borrowed design cues from Suzuki GSX-R. As of now, we know that the Gixxer will be available in two paint schemes- red and blue.
The Gixxer will be positioned above the GSR150, which will continue to compete with the base 150cc variants of Bajaj, Hero and Honda. The Gixxer, being a more premium offering will go up against the likes of Yamaha FZ-S, Honda CB Trigger, TVS Apache and the Bajaj Pulsar. While the Indian market has been kind to Suzuki, which is mostly made of scooters, this expansion will help the Japanese manufacturer expand its customer base and help its sales numbers.
