Top honchos of World Superbike Championship are considering bringing a new supersport 300cc class under its umbrella. It is in the process of talking to various manufacturers over this new 300cc race series, but we are yet to hear something concrete.
If everything goes well, then we will see motorcycles like the recently launched Yamaha YZF-R3 and the Kawasaki Ninja 300 racing in this event. The single-cylinder KTM RC390 could also make its way because of its high power figures. However, the CBR300R is very unlikely to be a part of this because it has the least displacement and power figures of all. WSB’s main aim with this new race series is to provide a low cost platform to develop new talent.
"At a meeting on 16th December 2014, the Superbike Commission approved assembly of a working group comprising of any interested machine manufacturers to develop a class structure for an entry-level category. The category would be based on the burgeoning supersport 300 class machinery and would aim to include varied capacities and engine configurations, with the aim to provide a low cost platform to develop new talent," said a WSB organiser.
This is a welcome move by WSB to scout for new young talents. We wish to see more Indian manufacturers showing interest in supporting these events as India doesn’t lack talent in this department.
