Australia's Jack Miller sealed a sensational victory in the rain-affected Dutch TT at Assen. The conditions were so tricky that the race was red flagged and restarted after 15 laps. The 12 lap restart changed the entire race even though racers started at their race positions during the red-flag stoppage.
Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez sealed an important second place to extend his lead at the top of the championship after title rival Valentino Rossi slid out of the lead. Britain's Scott Redding passed Pol Espargaro on the final lap to take a podium spot on the Pramac Ducati.
Other victims to the slippery track were Dani Pedrosa, Cal Crutchlow, Andrea Dovizioso, Bradley Smith, Aleix Espargaro and Alvaro Bautista. Reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo struggled to 10th place after being at the last on the grid at one point in the race.
Miller’s victory is the first MotoGP win by an Australian since Casey Stoner’s final victory in Phillip Island. He also becomes the first rider on a non-factory bike to win a race since Toni Elias won the Portuguese GP in 2006. After eight rounds of the MotoGP, Marquez now leads the championship by 24 points from Lorenzo and 42 from Rossi.
