About the Reviewer
Ridden for (If Owned) | 0-5000 km |
Got mileage of | 41 kmpl |
1.5 months back, i purchased the bike and till now I've clocked 900kms on it. Here is my short review on the bike.
Buying experience
I was planning to buy a commuter bike with decent amount of grunt and reliability in the 150-200 cc segment. The final contenders on my list were honda unicorn 160 and tvs apache 180 rtr,. Yes, you read it right, i wasn't even thinking of going for pulsar 180, because everybody recommended me to stay away from it. However the test ride experience changed my perspective. Honda didn't appeal me as an overall package so i decided to go for tvs. While checking out the bikes, i came across bajaj showroom and thought of giving the p180 a try. I entered the showroom and got my hands on one of the pulsar parked there. I just gave the starter a hint of touch and the bike came to life settling in a very refined idle with the engine barely audible. I asked for a test ride and the bike impressed me in almost every aspect, the seating position was comfortable, the gearbox was smooth and on the move i was hardly able to hear the engine. So this was it, i booked the p180.
Buying experience
The price quoted to me was 92000 (inclusive of road tax and zero dep insurance), i was able to squeeze out a 5000 rupee discount, leg guard mounted helmet hanger and seat covers. The bike was delivered the next day with 2.7 kms on the odometer. I didn't like the helmet that came with the bike, so the price of helmet was reduced and i finally paid 90,800.
Build quality and aesthetic appeal
The bike has decent build quality and everything appears to be very well screwed up, the wiring is concealed with the help of plastic pipes and nothing feels cluttered or cheap. However the switchgear housing could have been of better quality, that said, the switches feel sturdy and built to last.
As far as aesthetics are concerned, the bike has a very understated design, its neither a looker nor is it offensive.
Ergonomics and riding positions
The ergonomics are very nice and everything is within your reach, the handle bar is clip on type and is of adequate width. Switches are within your reach and are backlit and stay lit all the time, thanks to aho. Riding position is upright with the rider footpegs mounted a bit backwards, though the set up doesn't feel uncomfortable even after prolonged riding. However some might find the seat base a bit hard.
Gadgets and instruments
The instrument panel houses a analogue tachometer and a digital speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge and twin trip meters. Indicators include neutral, turn signal, high beam, battery charging status, shift light and side stand. The digital panel is lit up in blue while analogue panel glows in red and stays lit all the time. Switches are backlit and the bike also gets an engine kill switch.
Electrical
The bike employs a full dc setup (kudos to bajaj for that). Battery is rated at 9 ampere hour at 12 volts. Headlamp is a 35/35 watt halogen unit plugged into a hs1 socket and stays on all the time when engine is running while the tail lamp is a led unit. Turn signals and pilot lamps are rated at 5 watts each.
Engine and transmission performance
The engine is 178.6 cc single cylinder unit with hemispherical combustion chamber, sohc valve train with 2 valves fed by a ucal mikuni bs-29 carburetor. The engine has got twin spark capacitor discharge ignition (also called dts-i), throttle responsive ignition control system and exhaustec. It pushes out 16.8 hp of power at 8500rpm and 14.22 nm of torque at 6500 rpm with the engine redlining at around 9000 rpm. Power delivery is smooth with linear acceleration, low end performance is great with a fantastic mid range, however the engine is not revv happy and its better to up-shift between 5000-6000 rpm even in spirited driving. As far as speed is concerned, the bike does 42kmph at 3000rpm, 56kmph at 4000 rpm and 70kmph at 5000rpm (all figures in 5th gear). The engine hits the sweet spot at 60kph and can maintain the speed all day long without any stress.
Gearbox is a 5 speed syncromesh unit with one down four up shift pattern. Gear ratios are very well laid out and thanks to the light clutch, gearshifts are jerkfree. There are no false neutrals and its easy to find neutral.
Handling , ride quality and stability
The bike comes with telescopic shock absorbers at front and 5 step adjustable nitrox suspension at the back. Currently the rear shocks are adjusted to the stiffest setting and as a result the ride stays flat, bumps and potholes are felt by the rider but the bike doesn't lose composure though low speed ride quality is average.
The bikes comes with 17" inch rims at both the ends, factory fitted with mrf zapper rubber measuring 90/90 upfront and 120/80 at the back. Handling is confidence inspiring and bike feels eager to lean without any nervousness with tires offering sufficient grip. As far as straight line stability is concerned the bike sticks to the road very well and shows no nervousness at all even at high speeds.
Fuel consumption
The fuel consumption is at 41kmpl, with 80% city and 20% highway driving.
Periodic maintenance
Bajaj recommends first service at 500 - 750kms or 1.5 months, whichever is earlier and then after 4 months or 5000kms (whichever is earlier). Initial three services are free from labour charges. Engine oil costs 390 rupees while a crankcase gasket (to be replaced after cleaning of oil filter and oil pump strainer) costs 46 rupees. Paid services are economical and reasonable priced. The staff was cordial and carried out the maintenance job very well.
Final verdict
A good package at a reasonable price.
Overall rating 5/5

This is a very good bike for long routes. I enjoy a lot while going to my village. I don't feel too tired. My village is 400 km away. I go there once a month and the journey back is 800 kms. I never had any problem, even if I keep it parked for a long time, there is no problem in starting it, it is a very good experience

Pulsar 180 - Not Visible, But ALIVE!
Debanshu Guha Roy
This was my first bike, bought in my first job to commute a daily distance of 20 km (one-way). I had planned to book a Blue Pulsar 180 CC but when I saw a Red bike in the dealer's stock I was awestruck. I changed my mind and booked it that very day, despite being told that Red would take time since there were many buyers on the waiting list. Soon after I received the bike along with my daily errands and commute, I occasionally took it for long rides. Since it is one of the earlier versions of Pulsar, it has the on-demand power that one expects from a bike that big and nimble (for that time).Even now after over 15 years of sparingly using it (since I moved to Bangalore from Chennai), it still thrills just the same. Technologically bikes have evolved but this bike will remain my favourite. I am now unable to use it as frequently and want to give it away with a heavy heart to avoid it from getting spoilt parked for too long. Servicing and maintenance have been economical, with no concerns whatsoever. The bike, however, is a powerful commuter, with a sporty design that makes the rider want to twist into the higher RPMs giving you the pleasure of the wind hitting past you but on longer rides (>100Kms) can cause a sore back and neck.

I brought this guy (dont mind i refer my bike`s that way always) bajaj pulsar 180 dtsi (blue/black version) after trading my old yamaha libero in the year 2009... He stayed with me till the end of 2018 with about 28k clocked km`s on odo...During this period he gave me one fo the wonderful drives even in challenging conditions...> buying experience was great as i was upgrading myself from 109cc to a 180cc, i walked in looking for a 200cc stud whereas i don't know (like filmy style) saw this model parked in entrance of showroom and somehow settled down to this guy and straight away went for it...> few 400+km round trips were really crazy and trust me he never stopped for anything and anywhere (punctures, engine issues other blah blah)> few things i felt gross during these years were - tank getting loaded with water as the drain hole kept clogging every year during rain and i had to throw out litres n litres of petrol due to this...> the stock handle bar was a pain imagine it used to bend/ give up whenever we were to adjust and pull my bike out of parking.> considering the usage being lowest for such huge span.. I wasn't bored to spend on him for all these nibbles, he got 3 paint jobs done ,got himself a sturdy split handlebar, tank extenders, and customized engine fairy/cover done for himself... > again as i said he owned me so i was not really bothered to take care of him for service breaks, spares n all..> he still churned out really good mileage between 33-38km/litre all thru his life (i.E almost 10 years) even when we regularly cruised at an avg of 40-60km/hr speed inside city which we rode for maximum period. I have migrated to the much minnow suzuki access 125 now (imagine married guys fate) but whenever i see these latest big boys on road i always miss him to the core...I have narrated the entire package in my ways and sincere apologies for any typo error n slag.

1. Bought this bike in 2013. It costed around 87K on road then.2. I used this bike for commuting, touring, everything. Till now covered 60000 km and still running. 3. Looks never got old. 180 & 220 are the heartthrob before R15 & Duke came in. Color still shines. 127 top speed achieved. 4. Maintenance cost 500-1000 per service. (unless service centers try to loot your entire money). Changing oil in 3-4K interval is needed. Parts need to be changed rarely. I've got my tires changed every 20000 km. 5. Pros- Enough powerful for that much cost. Good mileage 35-40 kmpl. Low maintenance. Pretty comfortable for any ride. Good horn (I love the twin sound). Cons- braking (for older models. Now it has improved a lot with ABS & rear disc). Lighting is very poor (now we can get 180F for higher price which got better headlamps). Main stand touches every speed breakers.

Do not keep it open in rain or dew. Always park in shade, under roof or cover with plastic cover. Lube the chain and keep it moderately stretched regularly. Service doesn't need more than just changing oil, cleaning air filters & carburetor, so don't underestimate it. Do it every 3-4K km. Though it has got tubeless tires but pressure check is necessary twice or thrice a month.

It's cost so high for poor people range. Having high capacity but their fuel tank shape not good. This is a low mileage bike. If companies change in the shape of this bike fuel tank otherwise accidentally problem occurs many times. It's new model catchy and undesirable in comparison of pulsar 150. All is well.

Tips for other riders
Do not keep it open in rain or dew. Always park in shade, under roof or cover with plastic cover. Lube the chain and keep it moderately stretched regularly. Service doesn't need more than just changing oil, cleaning air filters & carburetor, so don't underestimate it. Do it every 3-4K km. Though it has got tubeless tires but pressure check is necessary twice or thrice a month.

Unbeatable capacity

It's cost so high for poor people range. Having high capacity but their fuel tank shape not good. This is a low mileage bike. If companies change in the shape of this bike fuel tank otherwise accidentally problem occurs many times. It's new model catchy and undesirable in comparison of pulsar 150. All is well.

Most powerful bike

It was confusing to buy a 180 cc pulsar, but when I started using the bike it was awesome to sit on the bike. Recommend all to go for this bike. Looks very less maintenance, has a very classy look & pickup is awesome. Each part is made with hearts, and the ride will surely blow your mind. Craziest bike.

Trust comes with care

From buying to till now, I would say "you care about your bike, the bike will care for you".Care is timely service, always keep the bike neat and clean. It's been more than 6 years, never faced any issues or problems while riding. One of my trusted vehicles. Long drive, daily commute, any weather, wet roads, traffic jam, blocked road etc. Your care converts into trust. Never gives to a situation where you feel disappointed.
