BMW R 1200 RS Summary

The R1200 RS is BMW Motorrad's sporty streetbike offering for those who prefer a faired motorcycle. It generates slightly less power than its streetfighter sister, the R1200 R, but it also weighs just 236kg, which helps its performance. It is powered by the same 1170cc boxer twin engine that powers a lot of BMW bikes. It sports conventional hardware like upside down front forks and plain-vanilla rear monoshock suspension. Of course, being a BMW, it has a ton of electronics to help the rider keep the rubber side down. There is no real competition from European manufacturers other than the Ducati Supersport. However, the land of the rising sun brings to the ring the Suzuki GSX-S1000F and the Kawasaki Ninja 1000.

BMW R 1200 RS Review

  • Good Things

    • Has good handling
    • Ample torque throughout the rev range
    • Features host of electronics
  • Could be Better

    • Instrument cluster feels outdated
    • Gearbox feels clunky during upshifts
    • Has mild vibrations at higher revs

BikeWale's Take

The BMW R 1200 RS is the fully-faired version of the R 1200 R. It sports top-quality components and loads of electronic equipment. The motorcycle also sports good handling and has ample of torque throughout its rev range. However, the R 1200 RS could do with an updated instrument cluster and wider service reach.

Drive is through a six-speed gearbox with a wet, anti-hopping, magic clutch, hooked up to a maintenance-free cardan shaft positioned on the left-hand side, as per bmw’s long history.

Unique to the r1200r’s structure is the engine serving as a stressed member, in concert with a new, tubular steel “bridge” frame. The telelever front suspension is unconventionally replaced, for bmw boxers, by a conventional upside-down fork with telescopic 45mm tubes, a la the s1000r. Two versions are available: un-adjustable marzocchi fork legs and a sachs shock with a knob for manual preload adjustability (plus a rebound adjuster), or optional electronic suspension adjustment. With esa, both gold sachs fork tubes have springs, while only the left side has damping and the esa adjustor (but no preload adjuster). The rear has a marzocchi shock with esa preload and damping adjustments. Whether these mixed suspension choices are technical or political, we don’t know.
