Introduction
As they say, the future is electric. And as of today, quite a few players are vying for a pie of this niche segment. Now, the Ather 450X we have here is cut from the same cloth, but has been designed ground-up with performance as its key focus point.
And, on that promise, we’ve welcomed the Ather 450X in BikeWale’s garage. Now, as a part of our long-term fleet, we usually tell you how the scooter is to ride in the city, out on the highway, its service costs, so on and so forth. But, with the Ather 450X, we’ll take a slightly different route. Besides the scooter’s general performance reports, we will also talk about battery charging infrastructure, range anxiety, connectivity suite, and the challenges.
The Promise
With performance at its core, the Ather 450X does pack decent numbers, if not earth-shattering. The PMS electric motor is good for 6kW (8bhp) of maximum power and 26Nm of peak torque. Coupled with a 2.9kWh lithium-ion battery pack, Ather claims a ‘TruRange’ of 85km in Eco mode. Of course, the range goes down significantly as you change the modes. Anyway, we will get you the real-world figures in the upcoming reports. What’s more, Ather also claims a 0-40kmph time of 3.3s.
Charging The Scooter
Ather says that the scooter can be charged from any three-pin wall socket with the help of the bundled charger. Moreover, customers can choose to install the Ather Dot home charger in their private parking space, at additional costs. Or better still, one can also fast charge their scooter at any of the Ather Grid charging stations across the city. Charge timings (full charge) vary from 1.5 hours with the Ather Grid fast chargers to up to 5.5 hours with the Ather Dot home charger or the 5A three-pin wall charger.
Can It Be Your Daily Driver?
All said and done, can you live with the Ather 450X? Can it be an ideal everyday commuter? And more importantly, can it replace your existing ICE scooter? We will answer these questions in the next report.
What's Next?
In the next report, we will tell you how the scooter is to ride in the city. We will also explain if it can be your everyday commuter to work or manage the regular grocery runs, and everything in-between. Moreover, since we have the scooter for the next three months, we will also report about its ability to do inter-city commutes, the challenges thereof, the charging infrastructure, and off-course the ‘range anxiety'.
