Introduction
The Indian 125cc scooter segment is an important one but isn’t home to a lot of action by two-wheeler manufacturers. It’s more important to have a presence rather than increasing its products numbers, at least for now. Mahindra, recently, showcased their new 125cc scooter – the Gusto 125. Once launched, it will take on the Honda Activa 125 and the Suzuki Swish 125. We give you a detailed spec comparison on their standings, in terms of power, performance, features and their looks.
Design & Engine
All the three scooters are being marketed as unisex. But the design language used by them are completely different. The Suzuki Swish, being the oldest among the three, has a very basic no-nonsense design, but it fails to attract eyeballs. On the other hand, the Honda Activa 125 and the Mahindra Gusto 125 look attractive in their own way. The Honda Activa 125 follows a more sober styling, but the big chrome filling on the fascia helps to increase its appeal. The Gusto 125 gets its attractive quotient from the ample use of dual tone paint schemes and interesting decals. But, when it comes to the rear it falls flat, whereas the rear of the Activa 125 still makes an impression. The Swish 125 is also mediocre at best.
In terms of mechanicals, all three scooters are powered by a 125cc single-cylinder engine. But in terms of overall power, the Activa 125 leads the pack at 8.60bhp and 10.12Nm. The second spot is quite difficult to decide as the power of the Swish 125 is 0.8bhp more than the Gusto at 8.58bhp at 7000rpm. However, the Gusto 125 has 0.2Nm torque at 10Nm, whereas the Swish stands at 9.8Nm. When it comes to overall performance, such marginal difference is not going to matter a lot.
Features & Cycle parts
The Gusto 125 is a clear winner in this section.. It is equipped with adjustable seat height, find-me-lamps, guide light, remote flip key and a small storage near the cluster. The Activa 125 and the Swish 125 doesn’t get any of these, but they do get a nice instrument cluster.
The Activa 125 has a simple one, but the small LCD display gives it a premium feel. This screen displays the trip meter, odometer and fuel indicator. The Swish too, has a similar looking cluster, but it also shows the oil change indicator. But the most boring looking instrument cluster award here, goes to the Gusto 125.
All three scooters get telescopic suspension, tubeless tyres and a decent amount of underseat storage. But the Activa 125 is a clear winner in the equipment department as it gets alloy wheels and a disc brake at the front with combi-braking system (CBS).
Price
Pricing is the deciding factor when someone is buying a scooter in India. Even if the product has good features but isn’t rightly priced, Indian consumers tend to shy away from that product. So getting the price right is always important.
The Honda Activa 125 is the most expensive of the lot. The standard version retails for Rs 60,655 whereas the CBS version will be yours for Rs 68,498 (on-road Delhi). The Suzuki Swish 125 is priced at Rs 57,711 (on-road Delhi) and is the most affordable of the three. Why? Because the Gusto 125 hasn’t been launched yet. Mahindra has said that it’ll launch their new 125cc scooter closer to the 2016 Auto Expo.
