The Indian government is aggressively pushing for the adaption of electric vehicles, which is quite evident by the high subsidies being offered on EVs. Making the deal even sweeter for the customers are massive incentives offered by several state governments as well. In fact, the electric two-wheelers that are eligible for incentives have gotten substantially cheaper than their original price in certain states. In that case, let’s see the top five states (in no particular order) where electric two-wheelers are the cheapest.
Maharashtra
Electric two-wheelers in Maharashtra enjoy an incentive of Rs 5,000 per kWh of their battery capacity while the maximum subsidy amount has been capped at Rs 25,000. Moreover, EVs are also exempted from the entire road tax. To give you an example, the subsidy offered by the Maharashtra government on the Revolt RV 400 electric bike is around Rs 31,000 which has lowered its costs substantially in the state now.
Gujarat
As compared to Maharashtra, the Gujarat government offers double the incentive of Rs 10,000 per kWh of battery capacity. However, the maximum permissible subsidy amount is lesser at Rs 20,000 and the road tax exemption is only 50 per cent. It’s worth noting that the prices of the newly-launched Ola S1 and S1 Pro are the lowest in Gujarat at Rs 79,999 and Rs 1,09,999. Whereas, both scooters are about Rs 15,000 more expensive in Maharashtra.
Delhi
In the national capital, the maximum subsidy amount which can be granted on electric two-wheelers is the maximum at Rs 30,000. On the flip side, the incentive offered per kWh of the battery capacity is, at Rs 5,000, lower than that in Gujarat. But the 100 per cent exemption from road tax is available like in many other states in India. It’s worth noting that the Ather 450X electric scooter is priced the least in Delhi at Rs 1,32,426, including FAME II and state-level subsidy.
West Bengal
In West Bengal, the incentive available on electric two-wheelers is the same as Gujarat at Rs 10,000 per kWh of battery capacity. Even the maximum permitted subsidy is identical at Rs 20,000 while 100 per cent exemption on road tax is also a part of the benefits package. The state government is quite optimistic about its strategy regarding the adaption of electric mobility as it plans to roll out around one million EVs in the next five years.
Bihar
Offering an incentive of Rs 10,000 per kWh of battery and Rs 20,000 of the maximum allowed subsidy, the EV policy in Bihar is the same as in West Bengal. In fact, it’s the same case with Assam and Meghalaya as well. This is accompanied by a 100 per cent exemption from paying road tax for the buyers. Now, looking at the scale at which the state and central governments are providing benefits on electric two-wheelers, we might soon witness a dramatic shift towards electric mobility, considering the frugality in maintenance and the low running cost they offer.
