Introduction
The street is a very dangerous place to satisfy your lust for speed. If you think you are good enough, maybe it is time you take the plunge into the world of motorcycle racing. Motorcycle racing in India is still in a very nascent stage and access to race tracks and events is very limited. However, some thoughtful planning and a decent investment can easily get you started on that track. So once you have finally stopped making excuses and convinced your parents, here are five things you need to do to get into motorcycle racing.
Racing School
Enrolling into a rider training program is not just important from the knowledge point of view, it is mandatory to get yourself a racing licence in India. The curriculum of a good racing school will include aspects of riding as well as rules and regulations that need to be followed on a race track. It will also give you a hands-on experience about riding on a track, which can be very useful for a novice.
FMSCI licence
The Federation of Motor Sports Club of India (FMSCI) is an organisation which takes care of the promotion and governance of motorsports in India. The organisation is also responsible for issuing racing licence, which is necessary to compete in any racing series in our country. You can apply for a licence through FMSCI’s official website.
Riding gear
You will need leather suit, helmet, boots and gloves to participate in any race. FMSCI has regulations regarding the type of riding gear that can be used. The helmet has to be a full-face lid with either ECE (Europe), JIS (Japan) or SNELL (US) certification. The gloves have to be leather gauntlet type, while the boots have to be full length. The riding gear can either be a one-piece suit or two-piece suit with 1.2mm thickness. The two-piece leather suit must have interlocking zip mechanism between the upper lower suit.
Narrow down the class
There are a slew of racing classes in the Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship (INMRC), and you can be a part of these, depending upon your age and experience. Honda, TVS and Suzuki conduct their own One Make championships, where they provide the motorcycles as well as leather riding suits for a nominal fee. But there are only a limited number of seats. There are also a host of open class categories conducted during the INMRC for both novice and experienced riders.
Get a motorcycle and support team
And finally, you need to get yourself a bike! A stock bike wouldn’t be allowed on a race track. Most tracks require specific bike preparation like taping over lights, removing mirrors, safety wiring, oil drain, bolts and filters, and replacing coolant with distilled water. During a race weekend, you would want to focus just on the racing bit and leave someone else to take care of preparing the motorcycle and keep an eye out for anything amiss. And this where a support team comes in. A support team takes care of setting up the motorcycle and ensures that you only concentrate on giving your best on the race track.
