Alpinestars SMX 1R Boots – 6-month report
Before I jump into the performance details of the Alpinestars SMX 1R over the past six months, a few facts first.
I have been using the SMX series for years now. I bought my first pair of the SMX 1 in 2007. I followed it up by upgrading to the next generation boot in 2012. And now in 2017, I have decided to settle for the racier version of the SMX 1 that was launched last year.
In these years, I loved the 2007 version – great fit, hardy, and comfortable as well. It lasted years. The next generation of the SMX 1 wasn’t as good. These looked sportier and sleeker for sure, but my pair disintegrated in no time. Plus, the pair was uncomfortable around the toe area especially over longer commutes. It wasn’t exactly grand to walk around in either.
Now to the boots in question – the Alpinestars SMX 1R. On the face of it, these are racier, better looking, and more tempting than the regular 1, we will give them that. But, what about the wear and… well the wear (in comfort terms) in the six months time we have been using them? Well, here’s the answer…
All-in-one
I love motorcycle boots that don’t need me to stock a pair in the office. An ideal commute boot for me then must offer protection when riding, must be comfortable and grippy over slippery office floor tiles and it must not raise eyebrows from the ‘suits’ when I walk into a meeting. Did I mention the boots need to be quiet as well? Well, they do, especially after the last couple of boots I have owned that sounded more like infant chu-chu shoes.
So far, the SMX 1R has done well. Though I haven’t crash tested them, but these do feel stiff enough to be able to do the job. There’s also no protruding edge to catch tarmac if I do end up having a fast low side. I like the all-day comfort these boots offer and even though these aren’t the vented version, the SMX 1R hasn’t left me with sweaty feet. Also, walking around on wet floor hasn’t been a problem.
And, of course, these are quiet.
Buy or not to buy
I have bought a pair.
And honestly, I am happy with these even though I think they are pricier than they need to be. I have used them on street bikes, race-replicas, on-offs and even scooters, and I haven’t exactly felt the need for better ‘short’ boots. These help me hook on to the bikes just fine and I don’t get hot feet in them either.
So, the SMX 1R boots are a worthwhile investment, no doubt, but pricey.
