Introduction
These are Alpinestars Tech 7 MX boots. Launched in 2013, these were a big improvement over the older 7s be it weight, protection or style. And personally, I do love the way they look, especially in this high-viz colour scheme.
The range
Now, just to bring you up to speed, the Italian motorcycle gear maker names its motocross boots in a pretty logical manner. So, the entry-level boot is a one, a Tech 1 to be precise. Then there's the Tech 3, which is a mid-range boot. There was also the Tech 5, which is followed by the Tech 7, the Tech 8, and the top of the line Tech 10. The latter three are primarily used by professional MX riders use.
The Tech 7 we have here is the MX boot, and it is preferred for its lightweight and compact dimensions in the racing world. Not to mention, it carries a lot of tech from the 10 but costs significantly less. You can also have the 7 in an Enduro version with the only real difference between the two being the sole design. The Enduro's design is more conducive to walking. And, it is the more expensive of the two.
Back to the MX, and here's what the Tech 7 is all about.
Minimum break-in
From what we can tell, there are three things that Alpinestars has tried to get spot on over all else - comfort, control, and protection. For enhanced comfort, it has a new buckle system that's easier to close and open. The microfiber construction is more flexible, and along with the ankle hinge it cuts down the dreaded 'break-in' period significantly.
What’s more, the boot opening is wide, the inner material is soft, and there's additional cushioning in the ankle and collar areas. So even though we don't expect to be able to run sprints in the Tech 7, we think we would feel right at home on the bike from the word go.
In control
The other equally important bit when riding on dirt is the feel and control the boots offer. This is especially true when you have to get on the rear brake aggressively but without locking the rear. You know like coming down a slippery incline or slowing down over a bumpy stretch. Alpinestars says they have altered the chassis of the Tech 7 to give the rider better feel and control of the brakes.
But that's not all; the Italians have also lowered the toe-box to make gearshifts easy. Other bits that improve control include a dual compound sole for better feel, a honeycomb rubber insert on the side to grip the bike better, and more flex zones in the Achilles area for movement, and with it higher control and greater comfort.
Save them feet
Protection wise, there's a shin plate to avoid those nasty log injuries when riding trails. And, the Tech 7 now gets Alpinestars' blade flex system mounted near the calf area. Not only does this allow for more movement, it also prevents hyperflexion.
Now, even though this boot is lighter than the older 7, the new foot shell with integrated steel shank, the new microfiber construction, and added TPU protection, helps the latest Tech 7 score high on the safety aspect as well.
Have boots, will ride
So, there you have it, the Alpinestars Tech 7 MX boots which not only look good, but also feel solid, and promise a better riding experience. In the coming months we will put these boots through some trails, some water crossings, and of course, many jumps, slides and falls! Let's see how they hold up.
In the meantime, the Tech 7s can be ordered at any of the Dream Sporting Gear outlets in Mumbai, Pune or Delhi. But, you can’t pick one off the shelf because they don’t stock MX gear; it’s all on order basis.
