Helstons Wind Mesh Summer Motorcycle Gloves
The Helstons Wind Mesh Summer gloves might have an aura of old-school charm but these are made to modern day protection standards. And as the name suggests, these are meant for hot climates like ours.
So, these gloves might not have metal sliders and other such modern bits. Instead, they are made of supple, high-quality leather with kevlar padding for the palm and carbon-fibre protection for the knuckles. So, crash protection then should be a non-issue.
But, we mentioned all this in the gloves' introductory report. Now, it's time to talk about the fit, the breathability, and the comfort these gloves have offered since we started using them over three months ago.
The fit
I don't have very big hands. And just to put things in perspective I am almost 5' 10" and weigh at least 10kgs more than I would like.
I wear a large sized Wind Mesh. And the fit on my hands is snug with just the right movement. Does it feel like I have nothing on? No, being leather, it doesn't have the same level of flexibility or lightness as seen on, say, a motocross glove. But then again, it isn't as restrictive as a full gauntlet either.
The breathability
The Helstons have a large mesh surface area. Almost all of the finger area and the back of the knuckles is mesh. And since it's a pair of street gloves, it only covers the area upto the wrists. So, in that sense, these feel fairly airy on the move.
Talking about air-flow, whether you are moving or not, the glove rarely feels hot inside. But yes, the faster you ride, the cooler the fingers feel. The flow of air is actually quite perceptible at higher speeds. And the only time I found myself sweating inside the glove was in 40 degrees of sweltering heat, while stuck in a traffic jam.
The comfort
As I mentioned earlier, the Wind Mesh fits quite well. And it isn't exactly restrictive in terms of movement either. So, you use your wallet, your zippers, your pants' pockets, keys, and even scroll through most motorcycles' instrumentations with the gloves on.
The gloves also feels supple and soft, and you don't feel like tearing them off your hands even after hours of riding. The only issue, and that's true for most leather gloves, is that once you sweat in them, putting them back on can be tedious.
Conclusion
The Helstons aren’t cheap. So, it’s a little irritating to find that you can’t operate your touch sensitive cellphone with the gloves on. But, that apart, these are pretty good. They also do justify their price in the way the Helstons are finished. And, in the way these fit and protect. These are pretty durable too. For instance, even after being caught in velcro many a times, the mesh area on the gloves hasn't frayed. The leather looks and feels almost brand new. And, the mouth of the glove hasn’t widened out even after all the tugging and pulling.
