Pure Speed!
How do you go back to the past while still racing ahead? Is that even possible? If you’ve had the privilege - yes, it really is one, in an increasingly ‘digital’ era - to witness the Royal Enfield Continental GT Cup in action, you’ll know the answer to that.
Flagged off in October 2021, the Continental GT Cup is a track-based series that’s, in every way, perfectly befitting of the legacy Royal Enfield has created. A legacy involving classically beautiful, unapologetically loud motorcycles, on-track bravado - and speed. That last bit is a particularly outstanding feature of the Continental GT Cup since it constitutes the highest-displacement one-make motorcycle championship our country has witnessed, which qualifies it as the fastest of its kind in India! However, it’s also much more than just that.
Anyone of a motorcycling disposition will agree that it’s simply a beautiful idea. A hark back to the ‘60s, the very premise of a bunch of mad-fast cafe racers tearing down a racetrack is absolutely refreshing. That Royal Enfield, a brand as celebrated for its motorcycles as for its lifestyle experiences, has pillared this series just makes the whole concept sweeter - RE is one brand that doesn’t stop short of going all-in, also coincidentally an important quality in matters of motorsport!
The easiest giveaway of this is the race bike itself. If you thought it wasn’t possible to make the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 more beautiful than it already is, you clearly thought wrong! The GT-R650 - that’s the official designation the race bike’s been given - is simply stunning. It’s minimalist and effortlessly retro, but it looks every bit as fast as it goes! The GT Cup bike’s pure sport DNA isn’t just skin deep, by the way. Its custom free-flow exhaust is, in itself, a serious performance boost. The suspension at either end is significantly stiffer, which naturally benefits high-speed handling and stability. With revised ergonomics, brought about by lowered race clip-on handlebars and footpegs further rear-set than stock, the GT-R650’s transformation into a serious race machine has wowed everyone who’s had a go over the last two seasons.
Has this entire exercise achieved what it set out to, though? In many ways, yes - even though it’s too soon, seeing as the series is only two seasons old. The premise was to create a pure sport that would be fun and memorable, while providing a serious platform for Indian motorcycle enthusiasts to indulge, and on that count, the Continental GT Cup has already become a tremendous success. Is that all it’s going to be, though? Far from it. The next season, just like the GT-R650, is only going to get saucier!
