Dirt riding in India is still in a nascent stage but tempting enough for a lot of riders to make their bike off-road friendly. Off-road tyres, custom bash plates and weight reduction are the few things we do to our otherwise road motorcycles. To go with the overall style, there’s a need of an off-road helmet. Getting a good dirt-bike helmet is equally difficult especially when there are limited brands in the affordable segment.
SOL helmets have been slowly but steadily increasing its brand reach in the country. The combination of good shell, excellent design and affordable pricing is what attracting India’s youth to this entry-level premium brand. Ranjan has been using their Zeus helmet for his road riding and has been pretty happy with it. But it looks like the company wants to focus more on the off-road helmet segment as well. They sent BikeWale their SX-1 model, which is the only dirt-bike helmet from them available in the country, for a test.
The first impression is quite encouraging. The white and black design, isn’t too loud or flashy but does the job of making rider look cool. The usage of random fonts and graphs is what appeals the most. On the inside, it gets grey padding and black plastic surrounds. The shell size of the SX-1 is same for all the models. What changes is the padding size. We’re using the M size which gets 25mm padding. The padding can be removed for cleaning and washing. This DOT approved helmet gets double-d ring straps for maximum safety.
The quality of the SX-1 is very good. In fact, the fit and finish is on par with helmets costing over Rs 10,000. This helmet retails at Rs 4,900 making it quite accessible for budding dirt riders.
