SOL SX-1 Dirt Bike Helmet

It’s been close to three months since I acquired the SOL SX-1 Dirt bike helmet. It was first used during the Honda Africa Twin media ride in Udaipur, and then the action continued with some trail exploration with my fellow riders. So here I’ll talk about the things I liked about this helmet and also the things that could have been better.

Good Things

The design and the colour of the helmet might look like a small aspect, but it isn’t,. The SX-1, for now is available only in one colour (to keep supply chain as easy as possible), but I’m glad the market has this. At first, the design might look busy, but the graphics and the white, black paint scheme means it’s easy for my fellow riders to spot me on the trails. We tend to ride at dawn and the colour makes it easy for my friends to keep a track of me.

As mentioned in the introduction, the SX-1 comes in just one shell size, with different padding sizes. I’m using the 25mm one, which makes it an L sized helmet. It provides a snug fit. The area near the ears fit in perfectly, and the upper chin section have decent support too. The air vents on the SX-1 proved to be of major boon. The system works well. Doesn’t leave much sweat. The paddings are easy to remove and clean. Just like the full-face helmets, the SX-1 gets three padding locks for the cheek pads and two for the back side. The double-D rings showed no signs of rusting after heavy usage in rains. It’s as shiny as before.

Things we didn't like

The cheek pads after wash doesn’t fit in the way it is supposed to be on the helmet. There’s a bit of gap between the pads and the shell. Also, the inner coverings of the helmet, especially for the chin pads are of cheap quality. It tends to come out of place, each time I try to remove the pads. But for a helmet that costs Rs 4900, it will be difficult for the company to find a space to make it better. The other aspect of the SX-1 that I didn’t like was its weight. The helmet feels heavy, and that means, long usage tends to tire you out.

Verdict

Until now, the SOL SX-1 has been a good companion. But there are a few things which could have been better. On the other hand, I left out any mention of the overall quality in this report, because I would like to put more hours into it before I pass a comment on that. So expect the verdict to be out in the next report.
