There’s one thing that you can’t take away from the Indian two-wheeler buyers – their need of maximum fuel efficiency or ‘mileage’, in their words. It’s always been the case of ‘the more the merrier’. But buyers aren’t always sure about the tank capacity of the bikes, which is as important as the fuel efficiency. These two aspects decide how far the rider can go before he needs another tank-up.
While the manufacturers tend to claim the highest possible fuel efficiency figure, most of the time they are never achieved in the real world. So here, we’re going to take the outcome of our fuel efficiency runs and tell you the bikes that will take you the farthest on one tank of fuel.
Rank 10: Bajaj Pulsar AS150
This bike wasn’t really designed to be adventurous and take you off-road but it surely can take you for a nice long tour. With a tank capacity of 12 litres, the Pulsar AS150 can do 636km at one go, thanks to its impressive fuel efficiency of 53kmpl.
Rank 9: Suzuki Gixxer
The 154cc single-cylinder engine of the Gixxer isn’t just refined and vibe-free, it is also fuel-efficient. This Japanese motorcycle can be ridden for 648km before heading to a petrol pump. That means, with a 12 litre tank and 54kmpl, the Suzuki Gixxer can do Mumbai-Goa on one tank. It’s the same case with its faired sibling – the Gixxer SF.
Rank 8: Honda CB Shine SP
The CB Shine SP is the second most fuel efficient bike on our list. But the lack of a bigger fuel tank didn’t let it go to the top of this list. Nevertheless, with 65.03kmpl and a 10.5-litre tank, it equates to a riding range of 683km.
Rank 7: Yamaha FZ-S Fi 2.0
This street naked motorcycle has been a bestseller for Yamaha. But only a few know that this bike can take you to far-away places on just one tank of petrol. The FZ-S Fi 2.0 doesn’t have a big fuel tank like a tourer but the fuel-efficient 149cc engine helps the bike do 696km at one go. The fuel efficiency for this bike stands at 58kmpl and tank capacity at 12 litres.
Rank 6: Bajaj Avenger Street 150
The Bajaj Avenger Street 150 has been able to make it to this list because of its 14-litre fuel tank, which is second biggest in this list. The bike returned 49.8kmpl during our fuel run and that translates to a 697km fuel range. This makes it the most obvious choice for long distance cruising or maybe it doesn’t. Read further.
Rank 5: Suzuki Gixxer SF Fi
Thanks to the inclusion of fuel injection, the Suzuki Gixxer SF Fi is more fuel efficient than its carburetted siblings. This entry-level faired bike has a tank range of 706km which is really impressive. Entry-level performance bikes can also be very fuel-efficient!
Rank 4: Bajaj V15
The V15 impressed us with the way it changed the game in the mass market commuter segment. The credit goes to its styling but it looks like there’s another aspect of it that needs to be told to the masses – it is a long-range bike. 737km in one tank full is possible on this Bajaj.
Rank 3: Bajaj Avenger Cruise 220
The Avenger Cruise 220 shares the same fuel tank capacity as the Street 150, but with a bigger 220cc engine, it offers more usable torque at the low end, helping it achieve 53.35kmpl. This figure equates to a riding range of 747km, beating the Street 150 by 50km.
Rank 2: Mahindra Mojo
The Mahindra Mojo is a perfect example of a bike with good fuel efficiency (36.25kmpl) and a massive fuel tank (21 litres). Mahindra markets this bike as a tourer and it’s good to see that it lives up to its expectation at least in the riding range department. The Mojo can be ridden for 761km before it needs refuelling.
Rank 1: Hero Achiever i3S
The latest product launch from Hero turns out to be a bike that be ridden the farthest at 763km. This is possible because of the very impressive fuel efficiency of 58.7kmpl and a practical 13-litre fuel tank. The Achiever’s start-stop system also helps with fuel savings.
Special mention: BMW R1200 GS Adventure
This iconic bike deserves a special mention in this story. It has a 33-litre fuel tank – making it a motorcycle with the biggest fuel tank in India. While we haven’t ridden this bike yet, the German manufacturer claims a fuel efficiency of 20kmpl. That’s a whopping 660km riding range for a motorcycle with a 1170cc engine and that tips the scales at 260kg.
