Just like motorcycles, scooters are the backbone of the Indian economy. They have made our life easy and stress free. Over the last couple of years, with increasing disposable income in the Indian economy, a lot of us are buying scooters to meet the family needs. In fact, these days, a family living in a metro city has more than one scooter at home, which has resulted in a double digit growth – something that the motorcycle segment isn’t able to catch up to. In this story, we list the top six highest selling scooters in India.
6: Honda Dio
The Dio is one of the oldest scooters in the Honda line-up. While the scooter has been getting some cosmetic changes in the form of new decals and paint schemes, the Dio didn’t really get any big mechanical changes. But that didn’t let the Indian buyers opt for this 110cc trendy scooter. In terms of overall design, the Dio follows the most unconventional approach, especially for the fascia where the headlamp is on the front fascia instead of the handlebar. This has made the Dio the second highest selling scooter after the Activa brand.
5: Yamaha Fascino
With the Fascino, Yamaha showed that a good and retro modern looking scooter doesn’t need to be expensive. It can be affordable and within the budget of a lot of Indian buyers. In fact, thanks to these aspects, the Fascino is the highest selling Yamaha scooter. Previously, the Ray was in this spot, however, with the launch of the Fascino, Yamaha has been able to increase its share in the competitive scooter segment. With an ex-showroom price of Rs 52,500, the Fascino is offered in a few attractive colours and is marketed as a unisex scooter.
4: Hero Duet
The Duet was launched at the same time as the Maestro Edge. However, in terms of the overall sales, the Duet has been able to match up to the sales figure of the Maestro scooters in the last couple of months. But if the sales numbers for the last six months are considered, the Duet still trails behind the Maestro scooters by a pretty good margin. Developed to directly compete with the Activa-i, the Duet is an all-metal body scooter that follows a sober design philosophy.
3: Hero Maestro
Here, we’re considering both the scooters – the Maestro and the Maestro Edge. While both the scooters are different from each other, they share the same brand name. Between both the models, the Maestro Edge has been doing really well since its launch last year. With its sharp styling and features, the Maestro Edge has been able to pull a lot of buyers from other brands. Being a Hero product, service and warranty isn’t a problem. The Maestro on the other hand, is a three year old scooter, due to which it finds limited number of buyers.
2: TVS Jupiter
The Jupiter is easily the best TVS scooter ever made. Known for this great design and engine, the Jupiter has helped TVS get a very big share in the growing scooter market in the country. In fact, if you add up the sales of all the TVS scooters, it won’t match up to the sales of the Jupiter. It recently introduced the front disc brake version – this shows the company’s commitment to updating its products with new features
1: Honda Activa
The Activa needs no introduction. With three models under this brand – the Activa 3G, the Activa 125 and the Activa i, Honda has been able to become the company that sells the highest number of scooters in India. In fact, the Activa range of scooters get a little above 50 per cent of the overall two-wheelers sales for Honda. Even though the Activa scooters are not well equipped as its competitors, it’s known for its reliability, smoothness of the engine and the fuel efficiency. All these aspects have resulted in a strong brand recall value among the Indian buyers.
