BMW has indirectly confirmed that the 2015 R1200R roadster will be powered by a new water-cooled powertrain. The 2015 R1200R’s technical details were revealed after the German manufacturer filed the homologation papers for the motorcycle’s mandatory emission clearance with the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
The papers show that the new R1200R has same emissions as its elder siblings, the R1200GS and the R1200RT, which indicate that the engine behaviour won’t be altered for the new motorcycle. The engine produces 123bhp and 125Nm of torque through a six-speed transmission. The new R1200R will weigh 227kg which makes it only marginally heavier than the outgoing model.
Though the new R1200R is expected to be heavily inspired by the Concept Roadster unveiled in June, this year, the spy shots have failed to convey how much of it will actually make it to the production model. However, the replacement of the iconic Telelever front suspension with a conventional dual-legged fork setup is sure.
The last BMW motorcycle to use the air-cooled version of the boxer engine was the RnineT and all the future models are expected to use this new water-cooled version. While the water-cooled engines might not appeal to all the enthusiasts out there, the use of water-cooling has become a necessity owing to the stringent emission norms.
