The Xtreme category of the 2016 Raid de Himalaya in Leh has been cancelled due to the army declining the neccessary permissions. The cancellation applies to participants in both Moto-Quads and car categories. No official word has been given about the cancellation, however.
This cancellation follows the death of a competitor, Subhamoy Paul, who was taking part in the Moto-Quads Xtreme category of the Raid. He died on Tuesday, the third day of the rally. He reportedly lost control of his motorcycle during the Losar-Gramphoo stage, at Kunzum Pass. The first response vehicle found Paul without a pulse, and even though he was flown via medical helicopter to a hospital in Manali, attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. The exact reason of his crash is unknown.
