The 2016 Triumph Speed Triple officially broke cover earlier this week, complete with a host of cosmetic and technological changes. As the all-new Speed Triple is still a couple of years away, Triumph has comprehensively updated the 2016 model to make it competent enough to handle the rivalry from modern litre-class streetfighters like the BMW S1000R, Aprilia Tuono V4 and the KTM 1290 Super Duke R. The new headlamp and LED DRLs give the Speed Triple a softer, less aggressive appearance, thanks to its lowered position and the rounded edges.
The bodywork features subtle changes, to make the Speed Triple more streamlined, thereby improving the airflow around the bike.
The 1050cc three-pot engine has been retuned to meet European emission norms. Helping this cause is the new cleaner exhaust system.
Thanks to redesigned engine components, Triumph has managed to extract 10 per cent more torque in low end of the rev range while making it 10 per cent more fuel efficient.
The Speed Triple also gets a new ECU, slipper clutch, ride-by-wire throttle bodies, ABS and revised traction control system.
The Triumph Speed Triple’s new stubby exhaust system isn’t just visually appealing, but also offers a 70 per cent improved flow rate to better the emission figures.
The Speed Triple is now available with changeable throttle maps which allow the bike to be ridden in five modes – road, rain, sport, track and a user programmable mode.
Apart from the Speed Triple S, Triumph also offers a performance-oriented Speed Triple R, which gets a higher-spec Ohlins suspension setup, carbon fibre panels and a red-painted frame.
Irrespective of what the styling changes might suggest, the Triumph Speed Triple continues to be an aggressive streetfighte which made it an ideal hooligan machine.
