The Suzuki Gixxer and Gixxer SF might have been a hit in the Indian market, but they failed to make an impact in the rest of South East Asia. As such, the company is developing a new entry-level sportbike specifically targeted at emerging markets. Rumoured to be christened GSX-150R, this bike was recently spotted testing in Indonesia draped in heavy camouflage.
The aerodynamic fairing and the shape of the headlamp of the Suzuki GSX-150R have been designed along the lines of bigger GSX superbikes. The rear set footpegs, low clip on handlebars and low seat afford a forward oriented riding position, hinting at the GSX-150R’s sporty character. Suspension duties are performed by conventional telescopic forks at the front and a rear monoshock. Both wheels get disc brakes. Powering the motorcycle is a new liquid-cooled powerplant breathing out of a twin-outlet exhaust canister.
The Suzuki GSX-150R is also rumoured to be launched with a 250cc powerplant, again for emerging markets. In India, the market for such entry-level sportbikes currently has well established players like the Yamaha YZF-R15 and the KTM 390s, which means that Suzuki would have a tough time making their presence felt. The product will also have to generate volumes to justify the investment, which is something the company cannot risk in the current scenario. So, as much as we would love to see these bikes in India, the chances of these bikes getting launched here seem very bleak.
