- Will be powered by a 1254cc engine
- Will develop 134bhp
- Not many radical changes in design
While we have known for a while that the successor to the BMW R 1200 GS will be called as the R 1250 GS, the technical details of the adventure touring motorcycle have now been leaked.
Visually, the new R 1250 GS and the Adventure variant will not feature any radical change, and it will be more of an evolution of the current design. The new bikes are 15mm longer that the R 1200 GS, although the width and height are the same. Both the new bikes have gained five kilograms, and tip the scale at 249 kilograms and 268 kilograms respectively. The sound levels have dropped from 92dB to 88dB, hinting at a new exhaust system. The R 1250 GS will get a 20 litre tank while the Adventure variant will feature a 30 litre tank.
At the heart of the new R 1250 GS and the Adventure is a 1254cc engine, up from 1170cc of the R 1200 GS. The new engine churns out 134bhp versus the 123bhp of the current bike, although the peak power is delivered at the same 7750rpm. Despite the extra power, the top is the same at 212kmp and 218kmph for the R 1250 GS and Adventure respectively. Reports suggest that the new engine will feature variable valve timing, although this remains to be seen.
The R 1250 GS will make its debut later this year at the INTERMOT Show in Cologne, Germany. The R 1200 GS badge has been in use since 2004, although the motorcycle has received a bunch of visual and technological upgrades over time. Although the market space has several new players now, the R 1200 GS continues to rule the roost as the top-selling model. We can safely expect this trend to continue with the introduction of the new R 1250 GS.
