BMW Motorrad has launched the all-new S 1000 RR in India. Now in its third generation, the flagship motorcycle is a distant departure from its predecessor. The company has gone back to the drawing board and redesigned and further improved an already good product. BMW offers the new S 1000 RR in three variants and we’ve spent some time tucking behind the visor of the top-spec Pro M Sport model at Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida. You can read all about the new motorcycle here, but before that, here’s a striking image gallery of the motorcycle.
When BMW said that every nut and bolt on the 2019 S 1000 RR is new, they actually meant that. Right from the looks, BMW has departed from the rather quirky looking asymmetrical looking headlamp design for a symmetrical one featuring a pair of compact LED projector lamps. The motorcycle sports an all-new fairing that makes it look more compact and sleeker. At the rear, the brake lamp is now integrated into the turn indicators which gives it a clean and minimalistic look.
The adaptation of a sleeker design is further present in the bike’s fuel tank which is slimmer than the outgoing model. Now offer a 16.5-litre fuel tank, a litre less than its predecessor, it provides the rider with better knee fit.
For the new S 1000 RR, BMW has done away with the Sachs setup and opted for semi-active Marzocchi inverted forks for the front. These units change the damping setup every 10 milliseconds thus providing the optimum riding experience to the rider. Depending on the ride mode selected, the semi-active units prevent the bike from nose-diving upon braking and also stiffens the setup during quick changes in direction inspiring more confidence through corners.
In order to deliver ultimate performance, the flagship motorcycle gets a newly developed 999cc inline-four engine that is now 4 kg lighter than its predecessor. With revised geometry of the intake and exhaust ports, the engine comes with BMW ShiftCam technology, which varies the valve timings and valve strokes on the intake side. In terms of power figures, the new motor pumps out 204bhp at 13,500rpm and 113Nm at 11,000rpm. Transmission duties are handled by a six-speed gearbox with a bi-directional quick shifter as standard.
The motorcycle now features a 6.5-inch colour TFT instrument console with a total of four views. While one is called ‘pure view’ which displays only the essential information to the rider, the other three provide a plethora of information like lap timer, best lap, DTC settings, brake application pressure and also a lean angle indicator. The unit also features Bluetooth connectivity for navigation and call alerts.
In the braking department, for the new RR, BMW has opted for new Hayes brakes. The front features 320mm twin discs with four-piston fixed calipers that do a flawless job at shedding speeds with progression.
The number of upgrades of the new S 1000 RR is simply exhausting. Pivoted to the all-new aluminium twin-spar chassis is a MotoGP-spec beam swingarm accompanied by a Marzocchi monoshock with electronic adjustment and a 220mm single disc with Hayes caliper to shed speeds.
The 2019 BMW S 1000 RR is available in three variants. The Standard retails at Rs 18.5 lakhs, followed by the Pro variant priced at 20.98 lakhs and top-spec Pro M Sport at Rs 22.95 lakhs. (All prices are ex-showroom)
