Triumph Motorcycles has updated its portfolio by launching the 2019 Street Twin. It is the company’s entry-level offering that sits below the Bonneville range. In India, the Street Twin competes against the Ducati Scrambler Icon in its segment. Let’s see how the two motorcycles fare against each other.
Design
The 2019 Street Twin continues to follow Triumph’s modern retro design language as seen on models like the Bonneville T100 and T120. For the 2019 update, the company has given the Street Twin a subtle cosmetic makeover. It receives redesigned side panels, a new seat, brushed aluminium finish brackets for the round headlamp, new alloy wheel design and an updated instrument cluster. Besides that, the motorcycle is offered with a new matte black shade. The Ducati Scrambler Icon, on the other hand, is an ideal blend of old school motoring and modern technology. It features a upright yet comfortable riding position along with design elements like the round headlamp, wide handlebar and the eccentrically-mounted instrument console.
Features
In addition to the standard equipment that includes features like ride-by-wire, traction control and ABS, the 2019 Street Twin now comes with two riding modes, Road and Rain, as standard equipment. It also gets a tyre monitoring system as an option. Coming to the Ducati, the motorcycle comes with a LED DRL bezel surrounding the LED headlamp, hydraulic clutch control and adjustable levers. On the electronic front, the motorcycle features only dual-channel Bosch cornering ABS. Traction control and riding modes have been skipped for this model.
Engine
Both motorcycles are powered by a twin-cylinder engine, but with different configuration. The Street Twin uses the same 899cc parallel-twin motor that now produces 64bhp, which is 10bhp more than its predecessor. Torque output stands at 80Nm. The company has also reduced the weight of the motor by using a lighter crankshaft, balancer rod and magnesium covers for the cylinder head. Coming to the Italian, the motorcycle is powered by an 803cc L-twin air-cooled mill that is capable of producing 74bhp and 68Nm. While the Street Twin features a 5-speed gearbox, the Scrambler Icon comes with a 6-speed transmission.
Cycle Parts
Under the 2019 update, the Street Twin gets an updated suspension setup for the front featuring 41mm telescopic forks, which are now cartridge type units. The rear continues to sport dual shocks like the current model. For braking, the Street Twin receives a 310mm disc with a new Brembo four-pot caliper at the front and a 255mm disc at the back with a two-pot Nissin caliper. In the case of the Scrambler Icon, the motorcycle rides on 41mm inverted forks up front and a preload adjustable rear monoshock- both Kayaba units. Braking is done by 330mm disc with Brembo four-pot radial caliper followed by a 245mm disc at the back with a single-piston floating caliper.
Pricing
The 2019 Triumph Street Twin has been priced at Rs 7.45 lakhs (ex-showroom, India), offering additional safety features and riding modes over the Ducati. The Scrambler Icon being the compant’s entry-level offering carries a price tag of Rs 7.27 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi).
