BMW Motorrad has teased the 2020 edition of its litre-class sports tourer, the S 1000 XR, while stating that it is scheduled to be launched in India soon. It is a comprehensively updated version over the previous-generation model which was on sale in India until now.
The 2020 S 1000 XR gets an all-new styling which has been a major inspiration for its smaller sibling, the F900XR, which was recently launched in India. The signature asymmetric headlamp has been dropped in favour of a symmetrically-styled setup which is more compact. The quarter fairing also boasts of a sleeker design. Whereas, the bodywork from the fuel tank to the tail section looks beefier as compared to the previous model.
The new S 1000 XR is much more advance in term of features as it gets full-LED lighting and a new 6.5-inch full-colour TFT display which gets Bluetooth connectivity. The list of rider aids comprises of traction control, wheelie control, hill-start assist, quick shifter and four riding modes. The company also has two set of customisation packages on offer.
Powering the sports tourer is a 999cc, in-line four cylinder engine borrowed from the S1000 RR, but without ShiftCam technology available in the sports bike. On the XR, this powerplant churns out 162.2bhp and 114Nm. BMW has tweaked the gear ratios of its six-speed gearbox for a better touring experience. Furthermore, the 2020 model of the bike is 10kgs lighter than its predecessor, weighing at 226kg (dry).
The outgoing model of the BMW S 1000 XR was priced at Rs 17.65 lakh (ex-showroom) and the 2020 edition will demand a premium over this pricing. It goes up against the Ducati Multistrada 1260.
