Honda launched the new 2020 Africa Twin CRF1100L Adventure Sports in India last month. The motorcycle is the successor to the previous 1000cc Africa Twin adventure tourer. While the ‘1100’ in the name clearly tells about the displacement hike it has received, the motorcycle has received several other changes. In that case, let’s check out the top five things you should about the new Africa Twin.
Increased displacement
Honda has replaced the previous 998cc motor with a larger 1084cc, liquid-cooled, parallel-twin engine. While the previous motor pumped out 86.04bhp and 93.1Nm, the updated mill is capable of producing 102bhp at 7,500rpm and 105Nm at 6,250rpm. This substantial increase has been achieved by altering the intake and exhaust systems of the powerplant.
Two gearbox options
The outgoing BS4 model of the Honda Africa Twin was only available with a single gearbox option – a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Now, for the first time, the bike maker has also introduced the six-speed manual variant of the Africa Twin in India.
Improved hardware
Honda had revised the overall chassis of the Africa Twin for better handling. The new split-type setup comprises of separate frame and sub-frame made up of aluminum. Moreover, it also gets an aluminum swingarm now for lighter weight and better rigidity. Adding to its touring credentials is a larger 24.8 litre fuel tank while the tall windscreen gets five steps of adjustability. For an added comfort in cold regions, heated grips have also been incorporated.
Lighter Weight
The aforementioned changes to its hardware have resulted in considerable weight saving. Both the variants of the Africa Twin including manual and DCT are 5kgs lighter than before. This is thanks to the introduction of a lighter lithium-ion battery and aluminum sub-frame and swingarm. With an aim to make the bike easier to move around, the manufacturer has also narrowed the rider’s seat to some extent.
Added Electronics
The new ADV has been equipped with an updated electronics package and the highlight is the new multi-information 6.5-inch TFT instrument cluster which can be operated by touch. The new console also supports Apple CarPlay. Other newly-incorporated gizmos include cruise control via throttle-by-wire, wheelie control, rear-lift control, cornering ABS and three-stage cornering lights.
Honda has priced the 2020 Africa Twin Adventure Sports at Rs 15.35 lakh for the manual trim while the one with the DCT gearbox goes up to Rs 16.10 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom, Pan India).
