If the YZF-R3 is a track-focused corner carver from Yamaha, the MT-03 is its road-going naked streetfighter twin. The motorcycle recently made its way in India alongside the R3. In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about the Yamaha MT-03 by listing the top five highlights of the bike.
Streetfighter Styling
The Yamaha MT-03 is the naked streetfighter version of the fully faired YZF-R3. But, save for the bikini fairing and ergonomics, both bikes are nearly identical. The motorcycle gets a projector headlamp and a wide handlebar, while the fuel tank and tail section are similar to the R3.
Punchy Engine
Powering the Yamaha MT-03 is the same 321cc, parallel-twin motor that powers the YZF-R3. The liquid-cooled engine produces 41.4bhp at 10,750rpm and 29.5Nm of peak torque at 9,000rpm. The motor is coupled with a six-speed gearbox. As we mentioned in our review of the R3, the engine on the MT-03, too, provides excellent refinement and good mid-range and top-end performance. However, it isn’t the most tractable unit as it suffers from a lack of low-end punch.
Features
As is the case with the YZF-R3, the Yamaha MT-03, too, has comparatively fewer features. The motorcycle comes packed with features such as a digital instrument cluster, full-LED lighting, and dual-channel ABS. But, if you want electronic rider aids such as ride modes, ride-by-wire throttle, cornering ABS, and a quickshifter, you must look elsewhere.
Cycle Parts
The MT-03 uses a lightweight diamond frame that is suspended on 37mm upside-down forks up front and a rear monoshock. The bike gets 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends wrapped on a 110/70 R17 tyre at the front and a 140/70 R17 tyre at the rear.
Price and Availability
Being a CBU import, the Yamaha MT-03 is priced at Rs. 4.60 lakh (ex-showroom), making it hold even less value than the R3. Yamaha has commenced bookings for the MT-03, and deliveries will start early next year.
