The Yamaha Cygnus Ray ZR has been launched in India at Rs 52,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi). Targeted at a young audience, the Ray ZR is also available in a higher-spec variant with a front disc brake, priced Rs 2,000 over the base model.
Though the Yamaha Ray ZR gets several cosmetic updates, the basic design philosophy is quite similar to the Ray Z. However considering that this edgy styling is what made the Ray Z so popular among youngsters, we hardly doubt that this is a problem. The front of the Ray ZR gets a redesigned headlamp which is flanked by turn indicators, while the side profile flaunts sharper lines. The instrument cluster has also been redesigned to match the scooter’s funky character.
Powering the Yamaha Ray ZR is the same 113cc air-cooled powertrain from the Ray Z. Developing 7bhp and 8Nm of torque through a CVT transmission, this engine comes with Yamaha’s proprietary BlueCore technology. To improve the safety quotient, the Ray ZR will now get an optional disc brake for the alloy wheel variant.
The success of the Yamaha Fascino is a clear indication of the shift in perception of scooters in the Indian market. Within months of its launch, the Fascino became the top-selling product in Yamaha’s line-up, showing the potential of this offbeat segment. Even the Ray Z enjoyed a fair bit of success in the country, despite it not being a mainstream scooter. With the Ray ZR, Yamaha is targeting a young audience looking for a sporty scooter. It will compete with the likes of the Hero Maestro Edge, Honda Dio and the TVS Wego. Deliveries of the scooter will commence in the first week of May.
