Yamaha launched the FZ25 in India last week with a competitive price tag of Rs 1.19 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). But it looks like the company wants to offer more to the Indian buyers in the performance bike segment.
In the 150cc premium bike space, Yamaha currently offers three bikes – the FZ-Fi, the FZS-Fi and the Fazer-Fi. All the three bikes are based on the same platform and that means Yamaha got three bikes for the cost of one. We believe that the Japanese manufacturer will take the same approach in the 250cc space. So it is obvious that Yamaha will develop a Fazer 250, which will be positioned as a tourer, rather than a street bike.
In fact, in an interview to PowerDrift, Roy Kurien, vice-president, sales and marketing, Yamaha India said “That is like logical, right? Just wait for sometime. We will let you know that” when asked about the Fazer 250. Well, it makes sense for the company to launch the Fazer 250 in India because most of the components would be the same. So the Indian buyers will get an option to choose from two bikes. But expect the Fazer to get a full-fairing, just like its 150cc sibling but with sharper styling and few bits related to touring like bigger windscreen. The engine would be the same – 249cc single-cylinder fuel-injected engine that produces 20.6bhp and 20Nm. However, the gearing on this one will be taller to aid the touring needs.
While the launch schedule for the Fazer 250 isn’t known yet, we believe Yamaha would at least give a year to the FZ25 before offering another 250cc motorcycle. But when launched, expect Yamaha to demand close to Rs 10,000 more over the FZ25.
