Yamaha India has shown interest in bringing in new electric two-wheelers in India. The company has begun various feasibility studies on the same.
This new revelation came from Yamaha India’s R&D head Yasuo Ishihara. The Japanese manufacturer is also checking if EVs can completely replace their current petrol motorcycles and scooters. But for now, the company believes, replacing its entire internal combustion engines with electric vehicles is impossible.
"We have already started our feasibility study in order to achieve this target set by the government of India but at the same time we will continue to develop more highly efficient engines in order to cater to the demands of Indian customers," the top honcho said.
"I believe that the EV products cannot be the complete replacement to the current internal combustion engines. This is the one of the biggest study points," he added.
Yamaha is tight-lipped about its electric vehicle plans but the company did mention its intention to transfer products and technologies from other markets where it currently sells EVs.
The government of India plans wants the Indian market to switch to electric vehicle by 2030. While the timeline might look little difficult, considering the fact that the right infrastructure takes time to build, a few manufacturers have already started developing EVs.
