Honda unveiled the Activa 5G at the 2018 Auto Expo. The scooter gets a host of changes and competes against the TVS Jupiter, India’s second-highest selling scooter. We find out how two of the highest selling scooters stack up against each other in this spec comparison.
Design and features
Both the Activa 5G and TVS Jupiter sport a conservative design language to appeal to a wider audience.
The Honda Activa 5G retains the bodywork of the previous model, although with a few minor changes and two new colour schemes- yellow and red. The scooter gets a touch of chrome on the revised front apron and the badging for a premium feel. The major visual change on the Activa 5G is the full-LED headlamp, a first in the 110cc scooter segment. Apart from the lighting, the scooter also gets a part analogue-part digital instrument console that gets service-due indicator lights and ‘Eco mode’ lights.
On the other hand the TVS Jupiter gets a conventional halogen headlamp and turn indicators on the front apron but gets an LED tail light. It sports an analogue instrument cluster and misses out on a digital display. The instrument console displays speed, odometer and fuel gauge along with an ‘econometer’ that alerts the rider whether he is in eco mode or power mode.
The Activa 5G and the TVS Jupiter get two hooks in the front. The Activa 5G gets a seat opener switch next to the ignition slot and a conventional underseat fuel filler cap. Meanwhile the Jupiter uses an external fuel filler cap that can be accessed through a key slot on the left side panel that also acts as a boot opener. TVS has also equipped the Jupiter with alloy wheels and an optional disc brake, whereas the Activa 5G continues to get steel wheels and a drum brake with CBS (Combi brake system) setup.
The TVS Jupiter sports a 5-litre fuel tank capacity with a fuel efficiency figure of 56kmpl. The fuel tank capacity of the Activa 5G has not changed and it continues to get a larger 5.30 litre unit. We can expect the fuel efficiency to be the same as the previous model at 60kmpl.
Engine
The Honda Activa 5G continues with the same 109cc, single-cylinder engine that makes 8hp and 9Nm of torque. The Jupiter is also powered by a 109cc, single-cylinder engine that produces 8bhp and a slightly lower 8Nm of torque.
Pricing
While Honda did not reveal the price of the Activa 5G, we can expect it to retail at a slight premium of Rs 1500-Rs 2000 over the previous model. Pricing for the TVS Jupiter starts at Rs 49,966 and goes up to Rs 56,056 for the ‘Classic Edition’.
