2019 Suzuki Katana to be supercharged

Suzuki has filed patents which have confirmed that the production version of the Recursion concept will feature supercharging. Expected to be christened as the Katana as a homage to the iconic model from yesteryears, the new model will go on sale in 2019.

Suzuki’s plans to introduce forced induction for the Katana has been an open secret, although there had been confusion on whether the company would go turbocharging or supercharging. These patent drawings however, have now cleared the air. The patent drawings show a supercharger connected to a middleweight parallel-twin engine. The patent also describes a dedicated intercooler system to cool the air from the supercharger.

First unveiled at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Show, the Suzuki Recursion’s biggest highlight was its turbocharged engine. Kawasaki might have had an early start when it comes to forced induction, but the Recursion will face no threat from the Ninja H2 as it will be positioned as a middleweight. Apart from boosting performance, a supercharger also helps improve emissions. With the emission norms getting more stringent, we might start seeing even small-capacity motorcycles featuring this technology.
