Honda is gearing up to launch their first hybrid scooter, the PCX 125 in Japan this year. The company has received green light to launch in Japan this September.
The PCX 125 hybrid uses a 125cc fuel-injected 125cc single cylinder engine that produces power of around 12bhp. Along with this, there’s an electric motor that draws power from a 48-volt lithium battery and produces 2bhp, taking the scooter’s overall power to 14bhp. The electric motor is activated for up to four seconds when the scooter is pulling from a start. This helps in better acceleration and also reduces the load on the petrol motor, thus decreasing the fuel consumption.
In terms of design, this hybrid scooter looks exactly like its petrol counterpart. However, it does get an LED headlamp making it more appealing. The battery is placed under the seat whereas the power drive unit is inside the front storage.
The Indian arm of Honda had showcased the full electric version of the PCX 125 at the 2018 Auto Expo. Before that, the petrol model was showcased in 2014 Auto Expo. It’s still not clear if this scooter will make its way to India in this form. But you should note than the Japanese firm is working on battery-swap technology for the Indian market.
