The Royal Enfield twin cylinder twins are scheduled for launch this month, and as part of the promotion, the company has entered the 2018 edition of the Bonneville Salt Flats International Speed Week, with the intention of breaking a land speed record.
The bike in question will be loosely based on the Continental GT 650, but modified to suit the attempt. It seems to have a lot of elements from the LockStock that was unveiled in May, like the extended wheelbase and the nitrous oxide injection. In the front are top-quality Ohlins upside-down forks with clip-on handlebars that are mounted so low, they're below the Tee. The front fender is quite reminescent of a certain Japanese motorcycle named after a Peregrine Falcon, and the tyres have been upgraded to meet the new top speed it will no doubt achieve. Peak power is expected to be in the 100bhp range. Royal Enfield has got Cayla Rivas, an 18-year old who already has a lot of experience - and a few records - to her name on the salt flats, to pilot the Continental GT 650 at Speed Week. She also holds the record in the class, at 212kmph.
There is no official word from the company on the attempt, but should it pull this off, it will be one more avenue to market Royal Enfield's highest-performance products in the current range.
