Alpinestars Revenant Gore-Tex Pro Riding Pants Product Review: Introduction

We have already introduced you to the Revenant Gore-Tex Pro riding jacket. This is the paired set of pants for the same. Also, launched in 2018, the Alpinestars Revenant Gore-Tex Pro riding pants are designed for the serious adventure-touring rider. And like the jacket, these promise to be well suited for all weather riding as well. So, apart from high-level of protection and comfort built in, the Revenant pants are also waterproof and breathable and come with a decent number of vents for those warm days. 

Just like the jacket, the Revenant pants sit right on the top in the Alpinestars ADV range. But, while the jacket is more adventure in its features and construction, the Revenant pants, says Alpinestars, have been designed closer to their high-spec motocross riding pants. And as a result, these are relatively light, more flexible, and more resistant to heat.

Now, there are more affordable adventure touring pant options available from Alpinestars, namely Bryce, that too uses Gore-Tex, and the Yokohama and the Valparaiso range, which run the Drystar membrane. Now, in terms of usability – at least on paper – these seem pretty similar. They all get ventilation, useable pockets, and some amount of adjustability for fine-tuning the fit as well.

However, the big difference between the Yokohama and Valparaiso, and the Revenant is, of course, the waterproof membrane. As mentioned, the former two get Drystar against Gore-Tex used by Revenant. Now, both these membranes function in the same way. Their construction allows smaller sweat beads to escape and vapourise, but the bigger rainwater droplets can’t find their way in. Gore-Tex, of course, manages this better over a variety of temperature and downpour situations.

The Bryce and the Revenant are similar. But, while both pants use laminated Gore-Tex construction, which makes them light, the Revenant offers higher levels of protection. It has higher reinforcement in the knee and hip area –the two most common areas affected in a crash. It also gets armacore around the knee and the lower inner leg area. These are two touch points where the rider and motorcycle interact, especially when riding standing up. This should offer more protection, and possibly a more effective rider-motorcycle interaction. There’s also CE 2 rated armour for the knee, and there’ the option to upgrade to Alpinestars’ own nucleon hip armour. 

Other highlights of the pants include adjustability at the waist, thigh, calf and ankle. These are all done via Velcro strips barring the waist adjustment, which uses a self-adjusting strap. The Revenant also comes with four outside pockets. The ones on top use waterproof zippers, while the large thigh pockets are convenient to throw in protein bars, chocolates, or even a spare Tee. Ventilation meanwhile, is taken care of by two thigh-mounted vents, which can be closed in case of heavy rain.

Since we will be using the Revenant jacket and the pants together, the pants too would be subjected to quite a bit over the following months. This would include rain, dust, heat and maybe some cold weather as well.
