- Royal Enfield is likely to be testing the load carrying capacity of the new Classic
- Gets subtle cosmetic and mechanical changes
- Likely to be a BS IV model
It’s a known fact by now that Royal Enfield is gearing up to launch the updated Classic and Thunderbird models as the spy shots have started emerging with increasing frequency. After the new Thunderbird X model was spotted recently, the updated Classic was also spied yet again. Unlike before, the motorcycle was sighted with a pillion onboard carrying a heavy backpack. This may indicate that perhaps Royal Enfield is testing the load carrying capacity of the motorcycle.
Judging by the spy shots we have seen until now, the new Classic will receive some major mechanical changes, besides the subtle cosmetic tweaks. Firstly, the updated model is underpinned by a double downtube frame, as opposed to the single downtube frame in the current model. Subsequently, the front and rear discs have also been shifter to the right side and the design of the disc is also different. Other changes include new handlebar grips, redesigned footpegs and a new set of split seats which look plusher now.
The engine of the new Classic will be powered by a BS VI-compliant, fuel-injected motor. However, we expect the bike in these images to be a BS-IV model. The company is also testing a BS-VI machine which comprises a catalytic converter and an oxygen sensor on the top side of the downtube, as revealed by the previous spy shots. This BS-VI model might be introduced at a later stage while a facelift (BS-IV) could be launched in the upcoming festive season. The company might follow this strategy to tackle the slump in sales it has been witnessing for the last few months.
