It has been over two years since we got the first glimpse of the Pulsar CS400 concept at the Auto Expo, though it now seems like the Dominar 400 has been worth the wait. Marking Bajaj’s foray in a completely new segment, the Dominar 400 is being promoted as a hybrid of a cruiser and a sportbike. Here are five reasons why the Dominar 400 might convince you to reach out for your cheque books -
Styling
Bajaj seems to have taken a leaf out of Ducati’s book. The partially exposed perimeter frame, sculpted fuel tank, beefy 43mm front forks, fat tyres and the stubby exhaust highlight theDominar 400’s muscular appeal. The pulled-back handlebar and the low seat are akin to a cruiser, though the rearset footpegs offer a more aggressive riding position.
Engine
At the heart of the Dominar 400 is a 373cc single-cylinder DTS-i engine based on the KTM 390 Duke’s mill. While this mill has proved its mettle in the performance-focussed streetfighter, Bajaj has tinkered with it to suit the Dominar 400’s character. Power output has been dropped from 43bhp to 34.5bhp.The 35Nm peak torque kicks in earlier at 6,500rpm instead of the 390 Duke’s 7,250rpm, which should improve its touring ability.
ABS
The Dominar 400 is available with an optional ABS system. Unlike the single-channel system in the Pulsar RS200 which works only at the front, the dual-channel system in the Dominar 400 prevents either wheel from locking up.
Features
The Dominar 400 is offered with a long features list which includes a slipper clutch, fully digital instrument console, auto headlamp on and a secondary display on the fuel tank. It also gets an LED headlamp, a first-in-class feature.
Pricing
The Dominar 400 has been launched with a lucrative price tag of Rs 1.36 lakh for the standard variant and Rs 1.50 lakh for the ABS variant (both ex-showroom, Delhi). However there is a catch, this is introductory pricing and we expect these to be hiked in a few weeks. For now, the Dominar 400 will only be available in 22 cities with deliveries commencing in January. Bajaj is also giving customers the option to book the motorcycle online for a token amount of Rs 9,000.
