The versatility and a price tag of Rs 13.06 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi), makes the Honda Africa Twin a tempting affair. We recently rode it in Udaipur and were highly impressed with what it has to offer. Here are five aspects of the Africa Twin that caught our attention.
The road presence
The tall-boy structure of the Africa Twin gets a lot of attention from bystanders. The three-tone paint scheme, balanced styling on the front and big exhaust are some of the reasons why the bike garners a lot of attention. And that’s a good feeling when you are behind the handlebar.
The motor
The 998cc liquid-cooled parallel twin motor has plenty of torque. Most of the torque is generated as the revs reach 2000rpm. The power delivery is linear and doesn’t scare the rider at all. The refinement level is excellent, so is the throttle response.
Dual-clutch transmission
The six-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) is a gem on this motor. We loved the way this gearbox behaves during the entire ride, be it on the road or off-road. The provision of D and S modes makes it livelier and gives full freedom to the rider. All these can be operated easily through just one switch.
Three-level TCS
It’s actually a four level traction control system if the off mode is also considered. When the TCS is off, the Africa Twin makes you look like a hero. The rear slides out easily and with the G mode on, it is very easy to carry the slide. But to keep things safe, level 1 is the best place to be at for water or puddle crossing.
It is manageable
It weighs 245kg, which is quite a lot for an adventure bike. But the way the Africa Twin hides this weight is truly impressive. The overall weight distribution is balanced. The accessible and adjustable seat height too makes things easy for Indian riders.
There are few shortcomings too. Like the rider needs to take one hand off the handlebar to operate the ABS and G modes. Plus, all settings gets reset everytime the ignition is switched on.
