There are times when a new two-wheeler launch changes the industry. It sets a new benchmark, new expectations and the customers don’t mind paying more for it. When KTM launched the 390 Duke in 2013, it changed the entry-level performance bike segment and in 2017, it has done it again. With a price tag of Rs 2.25 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the new 390 Duke is a value for money motorcycle.
TFT display
The talking point of the new 390 Duke is its instrument cluster. The TFT display is something we see generally on expensive motorcycles and not on bikes priced well under Rs 3 lakh, like the KTM 390. The cluster shows a wide range of ride data, along with a side pop-up menu, that is operated via the new menu buttons on the left. The kill switch and side-stand warning signs are text based. There’s also KTM ‘My Ride’ function that connects the smartphone to the cluster via Bluetooth.
Design
While the design aspect is subjective, the styling of the 1290 Super Duke R was radical and KTM took the same approach for the 2017 390 Duke. Split headlamps, aggressive style and exposed sub-frame take the aesthetic value of the bike to a new level.
Ergonomics
With a wider and longer seat, the rider has more space to move around the new 390 Duke. This was missing in the outgoing model. The bike doesn’t feel cramped anymore as the combination of increase seat height and new pegs position has eased up the riding position.
Engine
The 373cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine is now BS-IV compliant. The power output remains the same at 43bhp, but there has been an increase in torque by 2Nm to 37Nm, with peak torque kicking in earlier. This motor benefits from the ride-by-wire system that has made the throttle response smoother and the fuelling is excellent too.
Brakes
The increase in overall weight means, the momentum of the bike is higher and that there is a need for better stopping power. KTM has answered this with a bigger 320mm brake disc at the front. The brakes perform brilliantly.
