It’s been almost a month since the Yamaha FZ25 was launched and everybody’s wondering whether this bike comes up to scratch. It is being touted that the new FZ25 may very well be Yamaha’s attempt to retain its FZ16 customers and at the same time, attract new customers into their fold. The brief for its engineers and designers was to hit the right price that will make it a value-for- money proposition. But has that actually happened? Well, the bike did have a few shortcomings like the brakes and the instrument cluster, which we discovered when we rode the FZ25 in Goa earlier this month, but we also found five things that will help the bike carve its own niche in the segment.
Seats
The split seats offer fantastic comfort. The overall width and length are spot on, and the cushioning was perfect for someone who weighs close to 100kg. Extra attention from the folks at Hammamatsu on the seating ergonomics has definitely paid off.
Engine refinement
This 250cc single-cylinder motor offers just 20.6bhp and 20Nm but the tuning is just right for commuting. But the best aspect – its refinement – makes the FZ25 standout from the crowd and that’s really needed considering that the FZ25 has a few disadvantages in the features and performance departments.
Price
With a pricing of Rs 1.19 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the FZ25 is the most affordable 250cc bike in India and this actually comes as a surprise.
Gearbox
This bike has a five-speed gearbox and not a six-speed as expected on a 250cc motorcycle. Yamaha says the five-speed transmission is a perfect fit for them, considering the fact that the FZ25 is positioned as a commuter and not an aggressive sporty bike built for speed. For that, Yamaha has the YZF series.
Commuting aspect
All the above aspects makes the FZ25 the bike to own if you are in the market for something that will take you from home to office and back, every single day, with ease and quickly. The riding position too, is upright and relaxed and it complements the bike’s engine character.
