Ana Carrasco has become the first female rider to win a world motorcycle championship. The 21-year old Spaniard clinched the World Supersport 300 title by just one point astride her race-tuned Kawasaki Ninja 400 in the final round at Magny-Cours, France.
With the season kicking-off in Aragon, Carrasco displayed strong pace which she carried forward to the next round in Assen. However, she took the championship lead, finishing 11-seconds ahead of her rivals in Imola. With another win at Donington, Ana Carrasco struggled in the rounds at Brno, Misano and Portimao, but was still 10 points ahead of teammate Scott Deroue.
Carrasco started 25th in the final round this Sunday at Magny-Cours with Mika Perez and Scott Deroue (second and third in the championship respectively) fighting for the lead. With three laps to go, Ana fought her way to 15th with Perez dropping to third and Scott Deroue retiring on lap six due to technical issues. While Carrasco moved up two places to 13th on the final lap, Perez took the lead. However, MS Racing Yamaha rider, Daniel Valle managed to take the inner line on the final corner and snatch his debut win.
Ana Carrasco won the series with 93 points while Mika Perez and Scott Deroue finished with 92 and 80 points respectively. This isn’t the first time Ana has been on the podium; she is also the first female rider to win a world championship race at the Portuguese Grand Prix in Portimao last year.
