The Aprilia SR 150 has helped Piaggio double its scooter sales in India. The company recently revealed that sales in India grew by 105 per cent in the first quarter of 2017, of which a major chunk came from the sales of Aprilia SR 150.
Piaggio sold over 13,400 scooters in the Indian market in the first quarter of 2017, up from the 6,500 units it had managed in the corresponding period in 2016. Of these, the SR 150 contributed to more than half the volumes. With this, India contributed to over 16 per cent to Piaggio’s global two-wheeler sales. While India has always been an important commercial vehicle market for the Italian group, the same can now be said for the scooter segment.
The Aprilia SR range is globally available with a host of engine options with capacities stretching from 50cc to 300cc. For a market like India though, Aprilia thought it best to introduce the 150cc version considering the scope and demand for this market space. Besides, using a powertrain that is already being used in the Vespa range helped Piaggio in competitively pricing the SR 150. And this competitive price tag has been the biggest talking point about this scooter.
