There is no doubt that the Aprilia SR150 has turned the tables for the Piaggio group. Not only has it contributed in increasing the overall volumes, the scooter is also helping its sister brand, Vespa, improve its sales numbers.
While Piaggio had been struggling with stagnant sales numbers for quite some time, the SR 150 turned out to be a runaway success. But it seems like Piaggio’s decision of selling the Aprilia SR 150 through the Vespa showroom had a hidden advantage. The SR 150 has captured the imagination of the audience with its revolutionary looks and the lucrative price tag, which led to a significant increase in footfalls in the showroom. And this increase in footfalls has in turn helped boost the sales of the Vespa range. While Piaggio sold 2,075 scooters in February 2017, the number jumped to 3,148 in the last month. This reflects a growth of 52 per cent.
And the last month was not just a one-off. Over the last five months, Piaggio has sold 17,678 scooters as compared to 10,017 scooters in the corresponding period, a year ago. This translates to a whopping 76 per cent growth. Interestingly, the demand for the SR 150 has deflated slightly. The SR 150 sales over these five months fell from 13,063 units to 12,690 units thus marking a drop of two per cent.
