Last week, Piaggio unveiled the SR 150 at the 2016 Auto Expo while announcing that the scooter would be launched here as a locally produced model. The company’s MD, Mr Stefano Pelle also revealed that the scooter will use the Vespa SXL’s 150cc powertrain, though with a higher state of tune.
The Aprilia SR range is globally available with a host of engine options with capacities stretching from 50cc to 300cc. For a market like India however, Aprilia thought it best to introduce the 150cc version considering the scope and demand for this market space. As the Aprilia SR 150 will be manufactured in the same facility as the Vespa range, Aprilia decided to borrow the Vespa’s 150cc powertrain. This air-cooled and carburetted engine, which delivers 11bhp and 11Nm of torque through a CVT transmission, is also used in the Vespa SXL 150 and the Vespa VXL 150. For the Aprilia SR 150, we can expect the company to tune the engine to offer higher output to suit the scooter’s sporty character.
The Aprilia SR 150 will be manufactured at Piaggio Group’s facility in Baramati, Maharashtra. It will be launched in August 2016, with a price tag of around Rs 1 lakh.
