It seems like the Aprilia SR 150 is just the tip of the iceberg, as Piaggio group is planning to launch multiple variants of the scooter with smaller as well as bigger engines. Though the materialisation of these plans will largely depend upon the success of the SR 150, the first of these variants can be expected to hit the roads by early 2017.
Speaking during the rollout of the first Aprilia SR 150 scooter at their Baramati facility, Stefano Pelle, MD and CEO of Piaggio India said that both smaller and bigger variants of the SR 150 are a part of the company’s roadmap for India. The Aprilia SR range of scooters is globally available with a host of engines with capacity stretching from 50cc to 300cc. The company decided to opt for the 150cc for India first, as this engine is already being used in Vespa scooters.
Though Stefano refused to divulge more details, we can expect the SR 125 to be the next Aprilia scooter in pipeline. As the 150cc and 125cc Vespa engines have almost similar architecture, it must be child’s play for Aprilia to fit Vespa’s existing 125cc powertrain in the underbone chassis. The power and torque figures would be identical as the Vespa 125cc scooters.
As the cycle parts and other components (apart from the powertrain) are similar, this move is sure to have helped Piaggio save on production and development costs. While Aprilia shocked us with the SR150’s price tag, the SR125 might spring an even bigger surprise.
