Bajaj Auto has announced an eight per cent drop in overall motorcycle sales in March 2017 compared to its corresponding period in the previous year.
The company sold 2.44 lakh motorcycles last month as opposed to the 2.64 lakh motorcycles it sold in March 2016. Of these, 1.51 lakh motorcycles were sold in the domestic market reflecting a 14 per cent drop. The export market meanwhile, continues to stay unaffected by demonetisation. Bajaj shipped off 92,786 motorcycles in the last month, which is six per cent more than the export numbers in March 2016.
But on the domestic front, since the rural audience forms a big chunk of Bajaj’s target market, demonetisation has resulted in a big drop in sales numbers. While sales in urban areas have started bouncing back, the numbers in rural markets have failed to recover. We can expect Bajaj sales numbers to recover over the next couple of months.
