Bajaj Auto has also forayed into the ‘affordable’ electric scooter market with the launch of the Chetak 2901. It is the Chakan-based bikemaker’s latest and most affordable EV. The Chetak 2901 goes against the Ather 450S and the like. So, here is a comparison between the two, on paper.
Design
Both EVs, the Chetak 2902 and the Ather 450S look poles apart. One is a retro-styled offering with curvy body panels and an old-school appearance overall, while the other is a thoroughbred sporty-looking scooter to entice younger buyers. However, looks are subjective and there is an audience for both styles. Bajaj even offers some bright and swanky colour options with the Chetak.
Features
The Bajaj Chetak 2901 gets LED illumination, Eco mode, and a digital screen. But if you opt for the Tec Pac, the Chetak 2901 also gets sports riding mode, hill hold, reverse mode, call and music control, and smartphone connectivity. That said, the Tec Pac comes at an additional cost of Rs. 3,000.
Meanwhile, the Ather 450S uses LED lights but it also gets a simple-looking LCD. It does get Bluetooth connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation with five ride modes but only with the “Pro” pack which demands an extra Rs 12,999. So, it's also game on the features front for both EVs.
Motor and Battery
Powering the most affordable Chetak is a 2.8kWh battery with a 123km range and 63kmph top speed. On the flip side, the Ather flaunts a 2.9kWh battery that offers a true range of 90km. However, its top speed is 90kmph, significantly more than the Chetak. But, the latter also offers more range. So, if you are looking for a performance-oriented electric scooter among the two, then the Ather makes more sense but if you are looking for a subtle product which offers good range, then the Chetak could be your choice.
Hardware
Bajaj has continued with the same front and rear monoshock with a drum brake at both ends. Whereas, the Ather gets a telescopic fork and a monoshock. It rides on 12-inch wheels and features a disc brake at either end. The Ather EV has better hardware than the Chetak.
Price
Bajaj has priced the Chetak 2901 at Rs. 95,998, while the Ather 450S retails at Rs. 1,25,599 (both prices ex-showroom, Bengaluru). The Ather scooter is more expensive but offers a similar performance.
