Bajaj will unveil and launch its flagship motorcycle, the Dominar 400, on December 15. The Dominar was first unveiled at the Auto Expo 2014 as the Pulsar CS400 concept and is styled as a power cruiser – a mix of sporty stance and cruiser ergonomics. While Bajaj was looking at monikers like Kratos amongst others, the Dominar badge was chosen for the new Bajaj 400.
At the heart of the Dominar is a 375cc single cylinder liquid cooled petrol engine that shares its basic architecture with the KTM 390 engine. The Dominar mill is expected to be tuned at a slightly lower power output and with a meatier torque band owing to its cruising inclinations. While the official power figures are yet to be revealed, it will hover around 36bhp.
The styling, as we have said before, is a mix of sport-bike and cruisers and will be a naked motorcycle. The lines are muscular and curvy as against the sharp lines of the KTMs. The sculpted tank gets chunky shrouds for a beefy look. The headlamp will get a projector unit and the instrument console might be fitted on the tank like we see in cruisers.
Unlike the KTM range which makes use of a Trellis frame, the Dominar is underpinned by a chassis similar to the Pulsar 200NS. It gets telescopic forks in the front and an offset mono-shock at the back. It will get wider tyres with 17 inch rims and a single side exhaust. It will get disc brakes both in the front as well as in the back and might come with ABS.
The Bajaj Dominar 400 is expected to get a sub Rs 2 lakh price tag (ex-showroom) and will be positioned under the KTM Duke 390. It will compete with the Honda CBR250R, the Royal Enfield Thunderbird and the Continental GT as a sporty, cruiser motorcycle.
