The automotive world is spending billions of rupees in developing alternative fuel vehicles. Determined not to fall behind, Bajaj too is planning to develop an electric two-wheeler.
The Pune-based manufacturer plans to do something remarkable in the electric vehicle segment by 2020. Bajaj feels that it is important to be present in this segment, however, the development and the product strategy should be different. The Pulsar maker isn’t very comfortable launching an electric bike under the Bajaj brand as the customer expectations from Bajaj branded bikes are different.
Rajiv Bajaj, CEO, Bajaj Motorcycles wants to play with the brand perception with its first electric-wheeler. While this project is at a very early stage, chances are that Bajaj will take help of its partner – KTM – to develop this vehicle. The Austrian maker already has its E-Ride range of electric bikes that is sold in Europe.
We’re expecting Bajaj to develop a high-performance electric bike, rather than a commuting bike approach. Both the companies, Bajaj and KTM are usually associated with sportiness and fast bikes, so it makes sense for the company to debut its EV ambition with a powerful and stylish bike.
