The Bajaj Avenger has been the sole contender in the niche budget cruiser segment since it was launched in India in 2005. This lack of competition and decent sales numbers mean that the Avenger has gone through very few facelifts in the past few years. Now though, reports suggest that Bajaj is going to overhaul the current generation Avenger by replacing the Pulsar 220 engine with the 199.5cc engine from the Pulsar 200NS/AS200.
Bajaj might not tinker with the styling of the Avenger and we do not expect to see a lot of changes in the Avenger’s design. The current Avenger is powered by the 19bhp 220cc single-cylinder engine. If reports are to be believed, the new Avenger will be powered by the liquid-cooled 199.5cc single-cylinder engine which is significantly more powerful with 23bhp and 18Nm of torque available on the tap. This engine will be mated to a six-speed transmission. We can also expect Bajaj to upgrade the brakes to help improve the stopping power.
Though it had to share the market space with the Yamaha Enticer for a short period of time, the Avenger has been on its own, without any rival, for most of its life. These mechanical upgrades might bump up the price of the new Avenger, and we expect it to retail in the Rs 85,000 to Rs 90,000 price bracket.
